This doesn't have to be a pressure thing, or ultimatum, but just, 'hey, I'm feeling the itch and want to check in to where you are at. Do you us taking the next step this year? 2 years? 5 years? Never?' Listen without pressure and if his desires match up with yours. And as for keeping relationships in good standing, there is nothing more important, imo that good communication, well established trust, and lots and lots of kindness.
